A dramatic and arresting perspective in a very cluttered and distracting
world is the goal each time I trip the shutter. This discerning approach
is the art of subtraction.
This approach is particularly effective when used in black and white
photography. Black and white allows the eye to explore the composition
without the distraction of color. In black and white, the balance of light,
value and form sustains the composition.
The art of subtraction in its simplest form involves cropping the extraneous
elements. In some cases unconventional heights and angles are in play
to create bold lines. Another technique is the use of exposure and contrast
to create negative space and render one single focal point.
I hope you enjoy the art of subtraction in these black and white
studies.
